AdelaideNow... Too-fat dogs being dumped: "The Animal Welfare League has recorded a 25 per cent increase so far this year in the number of dogs being surrendered to its shelter because the owner does not have time for it."
It's symptomatic of a stressed and strained owner and stressed and strained families. It's pretty sad. You do not actually have to do a lot to keep a dog healthy. My time is taken up with all sorts of things but one of the best things is being able to spend time with my dog. She keeps me grounded and sane. Caring about her means I am caring about myself. Generally if she is looking not so good, neither am I. I have always had a dog since I left home and it became obvious to me that their health and wellbeing relate to my own. Just recently my dog got a bit fatter than usual , but then my daughter was really ill and had to go to hospital and we just hadn't had time to put into the dog because my daughter needed full time care for several weeks until she was better. That done, we looked at the dog and realised we needed to look after her and us. It meant we got back to healthy , happy living too. I have this dog because she was maltreated and starved. I got her from the RSPCA. I don't understand why people get animals and then don't care about them. I understand it's not always perfect...but neither is human life. The caring is the thing. A fat dog has eaten too much and hasn't been moving. It doesn't really take much time to get them back in shape and it's good medicine for you, the owner.
