Ponting 'comfortable' not touring : "Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting says he supports the federal government's decision to cancel this year's planned tour of Zimbabwe, but added it was important that cricket be promoted in the country."
it has nothing to do with cricket. It has everything to do with safety. I am glad the decision has been made. Our players won't like the thought of not playing Zimbabwe, but the conditions for any international game there do not appear to be very secure. Our players have been everywhere and they promote good cricketing standards. I am really sorry that we don't get to see Zimbabwe play but the truth is, their country isn't in a position to offer international events at this point in time. The news from Zimbabawe makes it seem very, very risky to go there. I hope the international sports authorities can work this out because it's not fair Zimbabwe cricketers cannot play our team either. Would they could put the game in a safer venue . These sorts of issues need to be confromted and resolved. I am glad John Howard took the decision. It's not one you can make easily and we are not happy we have had to decide this but we cannot put our plaers at risk. There are places where you just don't go sometimes until they have sorted out their issues at home.
