Landmark case over schoolboy's turban

Landmark case over schoolboy's turban : "A Sikh family is fighting a landmark case after a school refused to enrol their son allegedly because his turban breached the school's uniform rules."

We have a Sikh family near here and it's nice to see the father walk out in his turban. That's what Sikhs wear. I am of the opinion if the headress is part of their religion then it should not be altered until they are prepared to make that commitment. We don't have any strict religious codes any more and some would say we are the worse for it. We haven't those sorts of values. Sikhs do have long hair and it is what makes them Sikhs. It's like the veils. I haven't a problem with them because girls have been brought up with them as part of their culture and it would be distressing to them not to wear them. We don't care how clad or unclad people are but that is not the case for some of our immigrants. Often you find that the immigrants start to dress in a more relaxed way as the families begin to understand our culture. You often see people with part their traditional clothing and part ours. It marks a transformation to being Australian. To be honest I think we need to meet people half way for a bit and show a bit of sensitivity. To them, not wearing a veil or turban would be so unthinkable and appalling. We have to get people more used to our relaxed dress code because that's the thing we become homesick about when we are away...and the gum trees!
