Judge bows out with swipe at court delays

Judge bows out with swipe at court delays: "'Criminal trials have become longer and longer with no indication that this has improved the quality of justice,' he told a courtroom filled with well wishers including judges, lawyers, Attorney-General Michael Atkinson, friends and family."

People who are retiring have nothing to lose and nothing to gain from what they say, but their speeches are often well thought out and provide good insight into various systems and work places because they provide some perspective based on expertise and experience. They don't have to worry so they call it as they see it. I have always found retirement speeches very insightful and often inspirational because there is that long term perspective on work and the workplace and what it might mean. Sometimes I thnk we should collect and puclish them because they are a bench mark of our progress and often provide insight into how we could improve. Some cases are taking longer because they are horrific and there is a time delay to enable people to get their heads and emotions around it all. We almost need a "reflective" working party to deal with ongoing issues in our society. A current practice review team to look at our mechanisms and systems. Working in the system often precludes you from that vital reflection because there is a to do list a mile long.
