Elderly drink driver 'must be jailed'

Elderly drink driver 'must be jailed', police tell Melbourne court: "Regan today pleaded guilty in Melbourne Magistrates Court to refusing a breath test, driving under the influence and being drunk."

I can understand the frustration of the police because he is unsafe, he appears to be hard to get along with and then he is putting himself and others at risk because he is constantly driving drunk. That's a concern because the police time and money is just going round in circles without this person's behaviour being changed. Can you teach an old dog new tricks? I think so. he must not be allowed access to a car. He has to have that drinking problem dealt with because it is what is causing all of this. behind the drunk is the story of what created the chronic drunk. He needs treatment and as a drunk he is not in the position to be rational about what he needs...he wants to drink, he wants to drive and he wants to be difficult. That is an alcohol fueled set of decisions. He needs to be put in a place where his alcohol addiction and the causes for it are dealt with. I think it is important to get the root causes fixed. Do we have a place? He has to be taken off the road. Jail will put him away but not change his behaviour and may well create other behaviours we don't want. I'd like to see him treated. I'd like to see his licence revoked forever and I'd like to see him doing community service when he has been rehabilitated...and I think the police need a break here with people like that because they are the ones who invariably have to deal with the front line stuff in road accidents, so they need some consideration too. If he cannot be helped , I guess we have no alternative but to try gaol.
