Students need to learn a language

Shunned by many students, other tongues have benefits : "This week the Group of Eight universities joined forces with business and educational groups to urge all parties contesting the federal election to outline plans for language education in Australia, where students spend less time learning languages than in any other OECD nation."

The letter was co signed by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Australian Council for State School Organisations. So did it get any response? Is anyone doing anything about it? Have we worked out we live in a French speaking area in the South Pacific, that we trade with Asia, have close ties and trade with non English speaking countries? Have we worked out that using other languages helps bridge the communication and cultural gap? So what is happening? This article was published on November 10th 2007. Is the letter on someone's agenda?
