Call to focus on higher maths

Call to focus on higher maths : "But Dr Mousley said focusing on numeracy at the expense of mathematics did a disservice to students by providing them with only the most basic skills. The MERGA submission says the preoccupation with numeracy is aiming for the lowest common denominator."

The airhead approach to education has let us down. it appears we have not developed people with skills and work ethics. Summer Heights is enjoying success probably because it is highlighting our worst fears...who we have become and we recognise the stereo types and cringe at the air headedness of it all. Universities have been speaking for a long time about our lack of standards but it has fallen on deaf ears. We talk in terms of literacy and numeracy but shy away from higher learning curves and skills. We need to be prepared as life long learners. It is necessary for us as human beings to always be able to learn. it makes us rich, colourful, interesting and contributing. The maths issue is a valid point. I have friends who live in the rarified mathematical stratosphere. one moved to Canada years ago so he could actually operate at his level of maths. he met his wife and had his family there. He tried coming back, but we just do not have that level of maths. My other friend has transferred his skills to high level programming and has contributed well to our technology systems. We have made him feel odd at times but he has trained others and now we can operate at that level and new people coming into the country have those sorts of programming skills. We need to teach everyone to their capacity and teach them to teach themselves as they carry on through their opportunities. educated people do not run out of pathways.
