Rann reveals nurse GP clinics plan.

Rann reveals nurse GP clinics plan. :

"The program would cost $8 million over four years.

Mr Rann says the nurses would ease the workload for GPs by providing services such as blood sampling, wound dressing and by giving injections and vaccinations."

I was a bit dubious about what we have been calling the supernurse programme but it has had a lot of support from anyone I have spoken to. I am not in favour of the role of the doctor being undermined. Others view it differently. They suggest there are many nurses who would enjoy being more responsible and actually having a more or less fixed clientele they would come to know. They further suggest doctors would be used then for more demanding and specialised illnesses and treatments and therefore would not be put off by routine work. I take their point. Certainly a lot of nurses would probably be pleased to take over a more solid social role where they could make a real difference in a community. They could also be the ones who decide whether someone needs to see a doctor. Often you are not sure and go and see a doctor anyway.
