Three stranded sperm whales dead

Three stranded sperm whales dead :

"'Three are dead, one is alive; that animal is about 10m long, and the animals were scattered over about 100m of beach,' he said."

Rescuers were trying to devise a plan to keep the whales alive and then launch them back to sea. Obviously it didn't work this time, although we have a good success rate with stranded animals who beach themselves. Maybe they will be able to save the fourth one. No mention is made of why it may have occurred this time, but Tasmania holds the world record in strandings! I wonder why that is.
