International Solar Energy Conference 2008

Untitled Document

South Australia, fast emerging as the nation’s leader in renewable energy, is set to host an international conference on solar energy.

Up to 1000 experts on renewable energy and policy-makers from across the globe will meet in Adelaide in 2008 for the 3rd International Solar Cities Congress.

This is quite a coup for Environment and Conservation Minister John Hill and Adelaide Lord Mayor Michael Harbison . They secured the conference for Adelaide with their bid and it's something they can be well proud of. We have been working quite hard to develop some envronmentally friendly ways of renewing our enegy, resourcing our energy and using the state's resources to sustain a lifestyle we appreciate. I was just thinking at the weekend, that for all my claptrap about rainforests and environment, I do love my electric blanket and I value being able to use an oven and put on lights with a flick of a switch. The challenge for us is to have the things we want but not to destroy the trees, plants, animals and air which make us well. Put anyone in a rainforest next to the cascades and they feel well. Let them go out fishing on the ocean and they feel so much better. Let people watch parrots, butterflies and dolphins and all their cares drift away and let them breathe fresh air and they can tell the difference. So our challenge is to sustain what we like in a way that works with the environment. It is a real challenge for a densely populated planet who may all want to live with phones, cars, TVs, DVDs, electric blankets. We do have to look at what we can do and how we can do it. We need no other challenge. It gives plenty of scope for writers, artists, technicians, chemists, biodiversity experts, thinkers, cogitators...I am really pleased to see our state make an effort because it will stimulate ideas and industries around it too.
