'Hands-free' phones illegal

AdelaideNow... 'Hands-free' phones illegal: "In his judgment, Justice Gray said Burns had breached federal law by:

DIVERTING his attention from the road.

LOOKING at his phone's caller ID display.

REMOVING one hand from the steering wheel.

PRESSING the phone's buttons with his thumb."

Well done Justice Gray. It's a bit unfortunate we have to spell everything out like this because some people appear to have taken leave of their senses. There is no comparison between pushing an electric window and operating a mobile. You press the button and the window goes up or down. A phone requires turning on or off, scrolling, getting numbers and then the conversation itself can be a diversion depending on the nature of the conversation. Phones should be off while driving since people cannot seem to ignore them.Using a phone is more complex than a radio or CD player and CD players can be a distraction too if people are trying to change discs and find another one. I can see being stuck in traffic jams a time when you could make calls, if the traffic jam is going to take a while it would take your mind off waiting, but when driving, no. We have had too many accidents. Mobiles have become a law unto themselves. It rings therefore I answer.
