Government to close 551 websites: "Among those which are being axed are out-of-date sites like Urban Summit 2002 as well as others such as UK Man and Biosphere Programme - a UNESCO project - and the Drinking Water Inspectorate, both of which will now come under the Defra website."
We are all more used to computers and the Internet now and so it's reasonable to go through a renovation and update programme. Sites need to grow with us and we have become more used to a portal which can provide us with the avenues to more specific sites. SA Central ( linked right) is a concept we have had in Adelaide for quite some time and it works well if you are hunting down local departments, local events and local ideas. The good news about that site was that we were encouraged to participate in its development and so it does reflect well what we need and the SA Central people are very open to ideas and suggestions. As a one stop shop for our state it's pretty good. But there are a number of sites now which allow you to become orientated and then take off in your own direction. This doesn't mean there is no room for individuality. It means that sites are linked into a portal and it enables you a chance to find them more easily. What really annoys me are the number of sites which are just hanging there in cyberspace and have done for about 4 years and they are just untended, neglected and a waste of bandwidth. We carry them every day on the Net. There needs to be a clean up cyberspace campaign to get rid of the cyber debris.
