Mentally ill filling prisons: chaplain :
"Father Caddy estimates that up to 80 per cent of the inmates he deals with have mental health issues that require treatment - ranging from anxiety and depression through to schizophrenia."
We are actually revamping our mental health systems and it will take a bit of time. We have to look at the number of mentally ill people in jails, but the police are aware of their shortcomings and are trying to manage that better by consulting with mental health professionals. We also need to look at srug induced mental illness as opposed to other mental illnesses and whether these people need to be in the same institution. We also need to consider the relapses which can occur from certain sorts of drugs, where a person might be okay for a while and then have a psychotic episode. This chaplian has got things out into the open ans we need to deal with them. We have been going faster and faster and it's been about profit and productivity. The dall out from that is crime and mental illness. We haven't had time to deal with people as they have broken down. We have not heeded signs and in some respects we have just done things as a society which would cause more and more people to break down. We need to slow down. We need to unravel the mess because going this fast might be making lots of money but the price is extreme behaviour.
