Web firms fear being forced offshore

Web firms fear being forced offshore :

"They say Australia already imposes the toughest rules in the world for internet operators, who might find it more appealing to transfer their businesses overseas where government has no control over what they show."

So who does govern the Internet and what is the point of having laws in a country if the Internet is a law unto itself? France won a legal battle about Internet regulation and China has, so why is any other country not permitted to enforce its laws on the Net. Is the Net lawless? Deregulated? Unregulated? Spam is subject to laws in different countries. I hate the "other people do it" argument - it's very teenager. Is there an international symposium or forum for international Internet concerns? It is something where we'll, dare I say it, have to work together? The Net is subject to terrorism laws in different places...so let's not go down the road of if you don't do what I say I'll go elsewhere. We live in a community. We have community concerns. Our laws deal with many of those concerns. Do we just dump the laws? Having tough rules doesn't make you bad and having different rules doesn't make you bad. Having no rules doesn't necessarily make you bad either. We need to deal with this. You know...TALK about it. Discuss it.
