Spending promise will not ensure enough doctors, nurses: Labor.

Spending promise will not ensure enough doctors, nurses: Labor. :

"'What the Howard Government should be doing, is making a big enough investment so we're training enough Australian doctors, and Australian nurses, for Australia's needs and today's announcement is not going to achieve that.'"

The goverment package will correct the balance at the tertiary level and in terms of recruitment but it does not mean we shall have people going through school here who will see nursing and medicine as good career options which is where Julia Gillard's statement comes in. We have to make it a viable career path and know we have students who are already at school who will choose medicine and who will have an intellectual capacity and a williness of application to manage the thinking and the workload. That kind of approach to study needs to exist in schools so that we have suitable candidates to go into medicine. At least we are off our bottoms thinking about it but we do need to address the big picture because it's very skew whiff.
