Emotional return as Baghdatis receives hero's welcome in Cyprus - :
"'I'm in this position due to the sacrifices that I and my family made... I want to thank the people who followed my progress for 15 days. I didn't get to win the Grand Slam but I will soon,' he added.
'Work hard and believe in yourself,' was his advice to youngsters wanting to emulate his success."
There has been a really human face on the Australian Open this year and it's a good thing, because when you have the humanity, you have great sport. Roger Federer was very emotional when he won the cup, but he was fit, at the top of his field and a master , yet Marcos Baghdatis and unseeded 20 year old was giving him a real challenge. Marcos Baghdatis, for his part, knew he was up against the best in the world and that he had achieved his position there because he, too, could play wonderful tennis. Roger Federer won because he could draw on his awesome skill and experience, but Marcos Baghdatis could still be a worthy and credible opponent. No wonder Marcos Baghdatis became emotional when he got home. His family and his country would be justifiably so proud of him. It's a fantastic story and we all know who he is now... a tennis great.
