Island nations in trouble

SOS call as island nations go under - National - smh.com.au:

"Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia are all being affected by climate change, with residents on the Carteret islands in PNG already relocated to Bougainville."

It would be very difficult to accept that we would ignore our island neighbours when we are physically part of the Soth Pacific. We often pretend we are not. If islands like Tuvalu, which uses our currency is going to suffer then I think we need to be a part of the group which helps resolve the issues for the island nations. We happily go to these islands as tourist destinations and for resources. Those islanders are not the ones contributing to the global warming problems which are covering their islands with water or making their lands uninhabitable. We have contributed to the global warming problem and we are not prepared to sign the Kyoto protocol which is the one which is currently operating to resolve global warming issues. As neighbours I'd like to see us being neighbourly. It's not about us helping the "poor" islanders. They know so much we don't. I believe Mr. Albanese is right. If the islands can be severely affected in the next decade then we need to be a part of a comprehensive strategy which will help them. New Zealand and Canada are already helping them. What is the matter with us?
