Australia pledges aid for landslide victims.

Australia pledges aid for landslide victims. :

"The Australian funding will be channelled through the Red Cross to charter helicopters for evacuations, aid drops and damage assessments.

Medicines, food and tents will also be distributed to victims."

I am pleased to see we are putting in funds through the Red Cross, but I hope to see us offer people expertise too if it's needed. I know we readily go to Indonesia and help in a crisis. I hope we can help in this one too, because the Indonesians have had more than their fair share of pain and abject misery.

The article says that "activists" blame the landslides on deforestation. Activists is a pretty loose term and not very helpful at this point. Which activists, where? What do they activate and why? If they speak out about something are they activists? On what basis are these people activists because it is often a term with pejorative connotations. If the landslides are a result of deforestation, don't you think that's important to know? If they are not, then landslides occur for a reason and the ground needs to be stabilised. If people have been living there , I would assume it's not too regular occurance. People do not usually live in unsafe environments...though I confess we have people living in known bushfire areas. I am curious to know more.
