Nguyen permitted to hold mother's hand. :
"Clearly distressed, Kim's head and face were covered by a white scarf.
She was physically supported by an Australian consular official as she made her way into the prison visitors' centre."
No one disputes the wrongness of what he has done. Wrong. Not what we want. Unacceptable. Needs serious consideration and consequences. But death? Our hearts and our feelings have gone out to the mother and ,given her history, she is indeed being pushed beyond all human endurance and I think our government has worked hard to alleviate the pressure on her and I think our consular official has stood strong and stalwart by her side , grasping her hand tightly in hers to help buffer some of the blow. Mercy is a rare jewel in this age. I am desperately sorry for the mother and I am really glad I belong to a country that keeps on discussing this and trying to get it right for us. From what I can tell he was going to bring the stuff home to help his brother out. Stupid brother. Stupid him. I know some people don't care. I know it'll be how it is and I know I cannot stand in the way of other people's lessons in life. What I also know is, that as a country we have put ourselves right out thereand a number of organisations, churches and prominent people have worked with us and we have stood up and spoken our truths. Somehow I don't think van Nguyen has spoken his truth. I think that's the thing which bothers us the most. We have been so clear about everyone else. I am glad the Singapore government has heard Mr. Howard's plea and I thank Mr. Howard for understanding that we needed him to just keep asking in his own way. This is all in the front line for a reason and the mother will at some stage realise that so many of us stood with her. She must be nearly broken by now.
