Well, today's film was Serenity and all I can say is there are plenty of peole who disagree with me:
Serenity Reviews and there is at least one, energetic dedicated fan site: Join the official Serenity community, The Browncoats
It was like Wagon Train in Space or a NACE film - new age Clint Eastwood. I don't go much for guns solving everything and everything being wrecked and blown up all the time. Nor do I like the restrictions placed on actors and films when it is clearly going to be merchanised into the games market. The minimalist dialogue, the shoot and maybe think about it, the gung ho stuff ought to be gone 500 years down the track. It annoys me we are still getting these images. The women's roles were pretty simpering and washed out. I went into this with no background from the series and people have told me the series is quite different. There were some up sides to it!! I thought the actress Summer Glau was really good and I cannot wait to see her in a more demanding role. She was quite amazing in the portrayal of all she was required to perform as River. I even liked how she went right off and got stuck into people. She's so fragile , so the contrast was good. I didn't once look at my watch so the visual images absorbed me for the whole entire film and that is quite an achievement with me. The space ship attack towards the end was very gripping and that was sustained for a while after and it was when the characters started taking and some depth and artistic innovation were clear. If you regard it as a NACE film, then it is pretty well top of the range. The special effects were very carefully executed and there was a perfectionism in it. I should have liked to have seen more of the minor characters...that robot doll had a real screen presence as did her owner and I need characters like that to divert me from the heavy duty stuff. I'm not a bit sorry I saw it because I have thought a lot about it, especially the potential for Summer Glau. I'll maybe watch some episodes of the series. I can understand people being cross and frustrated it was cancelled. I am not good on exploding films!
