Lack of space in Earth's orbit

Lack of space in Earth's orbit : "The majority of those, about 11,500 pieces, are in low Earth orbit, which is at an altitude of between 800 and 1500km, where most commercial, military, scientific and navigational satellites operate."

I was staggered when I saw this picture! What you don't know doesn't hurt you, heh? I am mind boggled!! I thank NASA for letting me see all of that, but seriously, do we need 12,000 satellites and trackable objects? When did they all get up there?? I am almost speechless. It's bonkers to have that much stuff drifting around in our atmosphere. Don't we ever think? Do we never clean up after ourselves?
