Ramos Horta to be evacuated to Darwin : "Greens leader Bob Brown says Mr Ramos Horta is a great friend of Australia and he hopes he survives the attack for the sake of East Timor and the world."
Well yes. We have been involved in East Timor for a long time and we have tried to make that a positive role as far as I understand. East Timor is our neighbour and very tricky politically. Who'd be a leader. Mr. Horta is the leader of a democratically elected government but that counts for nothing these days. If it was a legal vote, he should be allowed to be in charge and it is very difficult for us to be so close and then try not to be involved in what are East Timorese issues. We tread a very difficult path here. I am glad we have offered Mr. Horta help because he is someone we all know and with whom we have an understanding. He does deserve to be looked after in a safe haven until he is strong enough to go back and work for his country. It is really hard when nothing can be taken for granted these days and if you elect someone , they can be taken out. If someone wants to contest an election, they can be taken out. We seem to be far too ready to get rid of the very people we need to make strong leadership. We need leaders and we need people who can give those leaders a run for their money. The destructive approach is getting us absolutely nowhere , so I am hoping we can be a part of recovering some sense into the region so that the people of East Timor can just get on with their lives and prosper.
