Nicole Cornes's abuser refused appeal : "FORMER federal Labor candidate Nicole Cornes wept with relief today as her four-year battle with the man who sexually abused her ended."
In the circles in which I mix Nicole Cornes is getting a lot of support. We think she is incredible for pursuing this and setting right a terrible wrong. We realise it is at great personal cost to her and that she is modelling good behaviour for us in dealing with the unthinkable in our lives. We have been proud of her and her efforts. This from a group of people who thought she should not have stood as a political candidate. Now our view is this. Had we known what she was going through at the time the whole thing would have looked quite different. It makes us understand so much about her now. We appreciate what she was trying to do. We believe she should have got stronger support earlier on and that we should have known so we could have supported her too. Sometimes public figures don't realise that we do understand personal pain and we do value people who try to deal with it. It is highly prized. Many public figures are afraid to come out because they will be shot down and torn apart. That era has passed. In the end our values have won and Nicole Cornes can be heartened by the knowledge there are a lot of people who care about her.
