10% of the population are addicts which is why harm minimisation doesn't work. An addict is irrational and the substance is the task master. A substance has no conscience and doesn't belief it has got it right until the person is knocked flat. They are owned lock, stock and barrel by the thing they are addicted to. It is a very destructive disease and a cruel task master. In the hands of experts Ben Cousins has a chance because he at least understands his illness. Whatever you are addicted to will run you at any price and addiction is a great leveller . Money and fame mean nothing . We do have excellent treatment experts for addicts but the road is long and hard and vigilance is a key because addicts can trick themselves and others really well...and Ben even understands that aspect of his disease. So, I'd like to think he can beat it. For as long as he actively fights it he will be a great role model in this world. Maybe he literally has to fight to remind himself of the commitment he needs to make to himself and his life. I wish him luck.
