3 in 5 death causing drivers had past driving offence

Messenger Community Newspapers Local News Adelaide South Australia: "The preliminary figures, seen by the City Messenger, also reveal three out of five drivers responsible for fatal road crashes had recorded at least one driving offence in the past five years, the majority for speeding and drink driving."

The whole article is a very sobering read. We can sit here and go how awful, that's shocking...blah blah, but how did it get that way? What has changed? Will tougher measures stop drinking and driving and speeding? Will they stop reckless abandonment when it comes to drivers and cars? Why do we have drivers like this and why do they have no understanding of cause and effect? It seems to me we need to backtrack and find the changes. Then I believe we need to look at who gets a licence. Then we need to work out whether people are driving unlicensed. The common good is ignored. The conscience is not there, so it's a personality thing. Do drivers need to be more carefully vetted as people before we issue a licence? Can our technology monitor driving better? We need some good thinkers, some good strategists and even more information to get our new action plan right.
