Premier vows to crush car-free day in city: "'Melbourne is a global, cosmopolitan city. It's got a very vibrant commercial network and people need to be able to move freely in and out of the city and around the city, so we don't think it's a good idea,' he said."
I'm surprised at this reaction. Some big cities have days where they ban cars both voluntarily as an eco thing and as a way of managing pollution. That young people have come forward with a proposal and have done it through what appears to be the right channels gives them the right, I think, to at least be heard and maybe even encouraged to look at the planning of such a move. Of course it has to be considered carefully...but at least look at the idea. We are talking clean air and carbon reduction here.
