We have been quite astounded in Adelaide by the news coming from Sydney. It is as though it were happening on foreign soil. The requirements and rituals which may well suit the leaders of the conference seem so far removed from how we think and feel. We are surprised at how much Sydneysiders appear to be being inconvenienced, alienated and ostracised from the event. APEC used to be a very warm celebration of our Asia Pacific ties and forward thinking. Quite what it is now is unclear to us over here.
