Strong support for plastic bag ban

AdelaideNow... Strong support for plastic bag ban:

"Nine out of 10 people surveyed (91 per cent) said they were in favour of a ban on plastic bags to help reduce landfill, damage to marine life and greenhouse pollution. The survey was commissioned as part of the 2007 Clean Up Australia campaign."

It's been great not to have plastic bags lying around and blowing around. It's been great to look at streets and beaches and just see the natural environment. There is nothing clever in what we have done. It has been a team effort. We needed a lot of encouragement, then some clear direction and now it's just second nature. We have talked about it at the shops. We have encouraged each other. There have been some great freebie cloth bags to get us started and then a nice range of commercial bags at a reasonable price to get us all underway. As I have said, we are never refused a bag and never frowned upon if we forget the cloth bags. It has been a really successful, co operative effort and 2009 cannot come soon enough. By then we'll have worked out how we manage the rubbish because most of us have used the supermarket bags for our home rubbish. We are getting good at it because our shopping centres and councils have been very practical and helpful in their approach. Classic example of changing people without making them feel chastened , fearful and stupid.
