Batty councils

The Australian: Mad schemes in councils gone wild :

"In the course of promoting these ideas, Ms Main - who is 50 years old, never married, has no children and whose politics are Green - has been accused of being many things, among them a batty Leftie, an autocrat determined to tell others how to live, while being out of touch with the lives of 'ordinary people'."

Batty councils and catty newspapers, by the looks. A good article , though, because it looks at some of the more interesting ideas councils have had. Ms. Main's council area includes Bondi Beach and she is being lampooned for wanting to have a pool of council cars , electric, if possible ,for people to hire for short term needs. She also wants to reduce the number of air conditioners and home pools. I could see a pool of cars being a good fund raiser and helpful to people who would normally prefer not to have cars. I think we do need to think about whether we need pools, when we live near the beach and how much we automatically put on the air conditioner. I do not understand why she won't allow the Austrlian flag to fly over Bondi. It is Australia and it is our beach...and shame on her for being 50 and Green!!!??? Then there was the mayor who wanted to rent monkey to gather coconuts in his area to stop them falling on tourist heads and the council which forbade a heritage listed house from flying our flag because the owner did not have a permit. I'd love to see a spot like this on a regular basis in the newspaper. It's a good read and , besides, mayors can be fascinating creatures!
