Better Bag Program

KESAB - Current Campaign - Better Bag Program:

"Australia is a huge consumer of throwaway plastic bags - and so, we have a large environmental problem to deal with. Each year, we use around seven billion plastic bags. That’s something like 350 a year for every single person living in Australia. That represents a massive amount of resource in making them and a significant problem in disposing of them."

A billion bags is a lot of plastic bags for a country of 20 million people. KESAB ( Keep South Australia Beautiful) is trying to get to the heart of the problem by using schools as the family educators. It's typical of how we create change here. Create good things for children to participate so they grow up feeling like they can make changes and contribute to change, and then working on the family unit. Shopping centres are also behind the bag bust as are some individual companies. When everyone works together, change is created. Again I have had overseas friends mention how they rarely see people smoke here. It was done in the same way but with an effort which went right across the community. There has been some small adjustments to the stance, but basically smoking is not accepted in places where people gather and most people are used to it now. Same with plastic bags. We are using fewer and you see more people out with their reusable and cloth bags or baskets. We are not as good as in Vanuatu. They had these fantastic woven banana leaf bags...which were completely compostable!!
