Acidic Oceans

The Australian: Poisoned seas eat at coastlines :

"ATMOSPHERIC pollution is taking a deadly toll on oceans as increasingly acidic seawaters eat away at shellfish and coral reefs, threatening the stability of coastlines around the world."

When you see marine life close up you realise the high price we pay for being "civilised". We certainly destroy all around us. Chop, cut, pollute, eradicate. Coral and coral reefs are brilliant. They are just so special and the fish that inhabit them are so distinctive and breathtaking. But our lifestyle neglects the environment. If we are happy to lose these wonderful things then maybe we need to think again and stop calling it a lifestyle. People can do the most amazing things. They, too, can take your breath away, but we are so sloppy when it comes to the health of the planet. "Civilisation" carries a high price and I question whether it is civilised when you are prepared to pollute and damage your home. If the article is right and the reefs help protect us from the complete impact of tsunamis, then we need to get busy. Like it's so obvious when you go to a tropical place. In the rain forests it can rain and you hardly get wet. The foliage and green mantle protect you and the water runs out to the sea. Go into the city and the bitumen, concrete, pavers, glass and roofs have you swamped in water and the streets and pavements running rivers of water. Why don't we look at how we are constructing things and then take a good long look at the water on this planet because we are not doing a good job of keeping it clean and channelling it to where it belongs. The way we go about creating our habitat is destroying the planet and I find it bizarre when we have brains, that we don't use them!
