Live sheep trade with Saudi Arabia

Live sheep trade with Saudi to resume:

This is another one of those issues which we haven't quite got right and after the Cormo Express disaster where we had 57000 sheep floating around in the ocean in hideous conditions, the country is pretty brave to try and get it right. Our farmers would be pleased with the trade agreements with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Animal liberationists have problems with the conditions on the boats and then with them being sent live to distant countries. We have very strong feelings about live animals being transported long distances. Melbourne zoo wanted to bring in elephants from Thailand, but that is currently being held up and debated at depth until the animal welfare issues are resolved here. It is something we need to sort out properly and all parties need to...yes, talk. It would be a real achievement to see this kind of trade resolved to the satisfaction of all parties and to know the animals have humane conditions. It really is a sensitive issue.
