School settles gang rape case
An exclusive Sydney girls' school has reached an out-of-court settlement with a former student who says she was gang raped while on an overseas school trip.
The now 18-year-old woman sued the Tara Anglican School for Girls for allegedly breaching its duty of care to her.
She told the court she was gang raped on a school trip to Italy in 2001.
She also testified that teachers on the tour had made her write a statement saying the sex was consensual.
After two-and-a-half days of evidence, the District Court has been told the young woman and the Tara school have reached an out-of-court settlement.
The terms of the settlement are confidential but the woman and her parents say they are happy with the result.
Outside the court, the principal of Tara, Carolyn Bowern, said she was looking forward to going back to work.
"The school's reputation hasn't been damaged," she said.
