CAMERON Meyer (Garmin-Cervelo) has won the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under by two seconds, after Team Sky took out stage six.
Ben Swift for Team Sky finished first - adding to his stage two win - ahead of Greg Henderson, also Team Sky and Matt Goss, HTC-Highroad in third place.
I cannot think of a more deserving winner since Cameron Meyer loves the sport, does his best to remain competitive, has a really good attitude and a balance about his racing perspective. Ditto Ben Swift. There has been an opportunity for the cyclists to simply really enjoy the Tour Down Under because normally they have had to slug it out in over 40 degree heat and ,in previous years ,I have been so sorry for them. I have also admired their levels of fitness and their dedication to their sport in gruelling conditions. This time the weather has been mild ,Adelaide looks green, the ocean has been topaze blue and it ought to have been a good tour. Certainly people were out supporting them . It was an awesome sight watching them come down the South Road after 3pm on Saturday afternoon. A vision of enthusiasm , professionalism and fitness. I could not believe how easily they were doing that after Willunga Hill. It has been good to have Lance Armstrong here, to know he did so much to get on his bike and help raise money for flood affected Queensland , and how appreciative he was of our enthusiasm for a sport which he loves. Yes, we like cycling here and we generally have the conditions for it because we know people love cycling , we are not too busy on the roads and we are aware of cyclists' needs. So well done , Cameron and well done Tour Down Under.
