Thank heavens for WWII

"AN underground concrete girder built by American troops during World War II is all that stopped cars from plunging into a monster pothole in the main street of Ipswich, a local councillor says."
It's a huge pothole!!Ipswich had a blown water pipe and then problems with loss of water pressure but nothing to explain a hole 5m deep and 5m wide. There have been ongoing problems there which they have been trying to resolve. To get a hole that big is a worry and thank heavens for the girder. Now to find out how on earth they got a hole that big underground!
There is a great site about Ipswich here.
