Clipsal 500

"The total build and removal period spans around four months and costs $750,000 annually."

Putting up a permanent stand would save that money and the inconvenience of traffic hazards while they are putting the temporary stand up and then taking it down. It could be used for other things. These are all good arguments. It's not just about money, though. Adelaide has always been a small city with a small, comfortable feel. To grand stand it would alter its feel and to bring in more races would add to carbon production, sound and air pollution. If people want the big city feel then there are plenty of cities to get a dose of that. In many ways most capital cities are just becoming international metropolises and Adelaide needs to decide whether it wants to go down that road. The Clipsal is hugely popular, as was the Formular One here. We are a state which likes races and the feel which comes with that. I don't think this should be a decision which is just foisted upon us. I think it is something we need to discuss properly and the public needs to be consulted. As it stands there are plenty of advantages but it would permanently change our landscape and maybe we don't want that.
