South Australia's plastic bag ban plan divides readers

South Australia's plastic bag ban plan divides readers: "THE State Government's decision to ban plastic bags by January has infuriated many AdelaideNow readers and sparked heated debate on the merits of the plan."

We had actually put pressure on the government and lobbied them so we could get rid of the plastic bags and the day we got an agreement this would become reality...we were happy. Now it is going to be a reality, suddenly the environmental and damage to fauna are no longer valid. Environmental groups are still quite clear that getting rid of plastic bags in supermarkets would stop damage. We don't have them littering everywhere but they still get inside our wild life and that is not good. I have never bought the green ones. We shall have to think of how we shall dispose of them when they wear out and probably a return to supermarket bin is the best way. They need to be dealt with properly. They are durable and will last for quite some time. I mostly have cloth bags and then some bags which were given away free to help us on the road to a plastic bag free zone. We did live without them. The NSW idea of a bit of a rebate for using recyclable bags is a good one. We do need optional packaging for those who forget. Bunnings has been good like that. They have reuseable bags at a good price and always have boxes on standby . There firm policy has helped us change and no one seems to mind. I think we just need to put out the ideas of how we shall manage. Team effort, people. At the supermarkets where I shop , everyone trots in with their pile of bags. Old habits die hard, but we are able to adapt.
