Pay-as-you-drive proposal to ease traffic ongestion : "The amount of the user charge would depend on the size of the vehicle and the wear it causes roads, an environmental charge related to engine capacity, a levy to cover the costs of crashes and the congestion charge."
Unless we are prepared to create a country whereby you can safely, easily and reliably conduct your life using public transport, then I think this is mean. By all means encourage drivers to get into the green machines..and that will occur over time anyway. By all means encourage people to use non peak times if they can and non peak roads. We have the quickest way to work. We have only a certain amount of roads to choose form. This country is set up so you usually have to have a car to get to work and back efficiently. Unless we restructure, we are a car dependent nation and I have said many times we need to rethink this because we will not employ people because they don't have a car! To keep charging motorists is just going to put additional strain on and peak times are that for a reason...unless we start creating different work and school hours we are stuck with our narrow thinking and systems. We are already paying a lot as motorists it is becoming outrageous now. When you go overseas you don't have to have a car to live and work. People still jam up the roads...but we need to look at changing working and school hours. I think it is high time we looked at our daily routine because life has changed. Schools could start earlier and finish earlier so kids can work, play sport, go to other classes and courses run by the community. Office workers could have staggered hours. I think we could learn form supermarkets in that respect and it would take the strain off.
