1 in 10 train drivers unfit for work: medical review : "It found one in 10 drivers have been taken off driving duties in the past because they were considered temporarily unfit for work. Currently more than one third were obese while one in three had high cholesterol."
It may not seem like good news, but it is. The fact there has been a medical review of the train drivers in NSW is fantastic. Unfortunately, a driver had to die and people had to be scared out of their wits for this to happen. Health assessments for different working groups ought to be considered a routine and regular thing. It oughtn't to feel unpleasant. It ought not appear odd. When people have jobs like drivers and pilots I think it's important for them to be fit, happy and healthy. They don't deserve what happens to them if their health fails and we don't need to be in dire straits because someone has collapsed at the controls. There might be other jobs which need health checks too. It might be a routine matter for companies but it might also be part and parcel of an employee's duty of care to themselves. Ultimately I believe we are responsible for our health but jobs may contribute to deteriorating health. In the long term it would have to improve workplaces and the general health of everyone. It really does depend on the strategies used . The inquiry into the Waterfall train crash is remarkably sane and bodes well for a common sense approach to national health.
