Managers unhappy with Gen Y

Managers unhappy with Gen Y : "'So things like Google, where they can get information whenever they want, and eBay, where they can buy whatever they want whenever they want, and MySpace, has enabled them, has conditioned them to want things immediately.'"

I hate articles like this. There's not enough information. There has been a survey of 240 business managers who are apparently saying Gen Y is difficult to employ. The Internet is not the reason. Lots of us Google, Yahoo, MySpace, Live Journal and EBay. We do all sorts of things on the Net. Doesn't make us hard to employ. Gen Y has largely grown up with parents working long hours, parents who have given them everything, a curriculum which looks more like advanced kindergarten studies and yes, the Internet. They have grown up bodies and emotionally they are very young. A lot of them have been brought up as perfect children who are just so gifted and talented...and yet they have had the chance to choose what they want to learn...and that wasn't going to school, maths, science, literature. I think more than the Internet has shaped them into difficult employees. They also have been subject to branding, advertising, consumerism, money , money , money and they have been wooed into alcohol and drugs from a young age. I think we need to look at what they can offer and then how we can manage that. They are not all unreliable but their age group is under so much influence.
