Taskforce to look at hospital attacks :
"The number of code black calls for emergency help in the state's public hospitals rose to 4,427 last financial year, 201 more than in the previous year."
Hospital workers are under enough strain without having to deal with aggression, no matter what the reason. We think we are civilised and we treat professionals in a very shabby way at times. It is the extreme few again and yet 4 and a half thousand is hardly a few. It's horrific. It is our low level etiquette and manners. We need to bring people up to respect others. This lack of attention to common good manners is costing us because we cannot get staff in critical areas. Skills shortage? Yes, we are very ill bred and it's time we changed. Last emergency ward visit was traumatic. Sad , sad cases indeed and mostly drugs and alcohol so if you are a normal person with normal illnesses you feel really odd, like you don't belong and you feel glad you don't belong because the others look so tragic and miserable. Maybe the alcohol and drug affected people need specialised treatment centres where their needs can be better met...but you can see the desperation and you can feel the tension. I actually thought the hospital staff were amazingly resilient and expert at dealing with everyone and anyone but you can understand why no one wants to do the job now.
