Reef 'still safe' after Irwin death :
"'It's a very, very safe activity and we get a lot of people out there in their 70s and 80s snorkelling for their first time and coming back absolutely raving over the fact that they've been able to see these stingrays and other animals out there in their natural habitat,' Mr McKenzie told ABC radio."
I'm with Debra Messing. I'd be asking for a double too. Thing is, if Steve Irwin, who was so comfortable in those sorts of conditions, was at risk, what hope is there for mere mortals? I know many Australians will just get back in the water and life will go on and that's probably how it should be, because it is so unheard of to go to the Great Barrier Reef and not come back. Everyone raves about it and most divers consider it the best place in the world for diving. Let them. Those people who are fearful need to be understood and allowed for. I even tried to watch Australia's Deadliest Sea Creatures which was on last night, thinking being well informed would help. The programme was supposed to be helping us come to terms with our environment. By the time I was half way through I thought I'd never walk on the beach again, never slosh through the water and swimming was well and truly out of the question. It really put the wind up me and yet I believe it was very well made and the doctor talking about how to deal with sting ray attacks was absolutely excellent. That information should be out there. The guy who was showing us sting rays was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic...but those big rays going over head were like giant space ship and then I got to the 3 metre jelly fish and that was that. I could not look at the sharks. So...so much for being well informed. I now believe ignorance is bliss!!!
