Rainbow Serpent dreaming endangered by mine expansion, say local Elders:
"JOHN BRADLEY: Rainbow serpents are generally associated with the wet season, floods, cyclones, strong storm winds and other sort of natural destructive forces.
So to stir up a rainbow serpent, to act in a way that is wrongful towards a rainbow serpent could bring any one of those manifestations to the fore."
The aborigines have lived in this land for a very long time and they understand it far better than we do even though we pretend we know what we are doing. This is why Steve Irwin was so important. He had a real understanding of our land and I am curious to know how the aborigines felt about him. Xstrata is mining on sacred land and wants to convert its zinc mine into an open cut mine. This would cut off the Rainbow Serpent's tail. I have watched the Expressway be built right through the Tjilbrucke Trail and it has changed the land which our aborigines know every part of. It's not a good idea to cut the tail off the Rainbow Serpent because it is part of the Dreaming. Xstrata is wanting to do it so it doesn't have to close the mine. They'll see. Sacred land is sacred land and it's so important to sustain a good dialogue with our indigenous people..
