Europe says sorry to Vanuatu 400 years after de Queiros:
"Last Sunday people gathered, European dignitaries and Vanuatu leaders, and faced the consequences of an encounter which led to clashes, colonisation and statehood. 'We regret having brought suffering to your forefathers,' said the ambassador. We ask you to forgive us for what befell you. We bring nothing of significance – but our hearts,'"
What a wonderful, wonderful moving gesture. 400 years later and the Spanish could absolve themselves of fault, but they have chosen not to do that. It is something which has been done with dignity and which the people of Santos have accepted with very good grace.
