Flood evacuees shelter in Katherine schools.

Flood evacuees shelter in Katherine schools. :

"Commander Vanderlaan says power has been deliberately cut to the town.

She maintains the Katherine River will not go any higher than 18.8 metres but says water will continue to flow into the town."

An increase of more or less 19 metres in river height is massive. It's nearly up to the bridges. A huge hike in water level. A friend of mine has family there and we have seen photos. The people of Katherine are remarkably calm and taking it all in their stride. The area will be so green and wet but the effect of those sorts of river heights will be felt for quite some time. The comment from the locals was that they felt close to the people in Queensland and WA who have had cyclone sirens and didn't think they had much to complain about. That is amazing spirit. What a great community. We are thinking of you.
