Diamonds place curse on world's poorest country

AM Archive - Diamonds place curse on world's poorest country:

"The diamond trade is being blamed for almost killing the West African State of Sierra Leone. A new report released overnight says the illegal diamond trade from the country has made worse the brutal conflict that's practically torn the tiny country apart.

The study accuses illicit diamond traders of funding the warring parties, and global giants like De Beers of unwittingly prolonging an agonising conflict."

Sierra Leone ought to be the richest country in the world with all those diamonds and its people ought to be on the world's richest list. The diamonds are smuggled out, but I guess that is free enterprise and if the people can't keep their own diamonds in their own country then they need to harden up and learn how to play hard ball. I can just see the consumer boycott of these diamonds being followed! It would be nice if we took a proper look at this and set the diamond trade up so that the nation of origin can benefit. As it stands...well, what's the point of integrity when there's money to be made?
