US backs off Katrina media ban.

US backs off Katrina media ban. :

"'For an agency to unilaterally ban all coverage of a major component of its governmental function, that is, recovery of the deceased victims of the tragedy, is unprecedented,' CNN said.

'It is not the place of government to replace its own internal judgment for that of a free and independent media.'

CNN said that the controversy over the handling of the disaster relief effort made it all the more important that the media had unfettered access."

Well, CNN has won its battle to show everything from Katrina and reporters will be allowed to film the recovery of the bodies. Katrina has highlighted some strong feelings in the Americans which must have always been there, but now they are really getting stuck into things and trying to sort out their real and true values. As I said yesterday, filming the recovery of bodies after a week in the water does not seem a good idea to me, but CNN is quite clear about what it wants and I respect that because media does have to work out quite clearly what its position is these days and maybe tripe isn't what it's about any more.
