Climate question

Over the last couple of weeks the radio announcers have been noticing that the thermometer drops by a couple of degrees in the early morning and then goes up again. A kind meteorologist from America emailed to say it had something to do with the height of the thermometers at 5 foot off the ground, the sun just coming up and the convection current replacing the cold ground surface air up to the height of the thermometer. I could hear the guys thinking ,because we have all been taught that hot air rises. Later someone said that it seemed odd that the air temperature would be affected by the random placement of a thermometer at the ....Bureau of Meteorology. Aren't they the experts?? Well, it has been nice and obvious we are not Adam Spencer when he was on triple J and all of us were struggling with these maths/science ideas for which we have only very shakey grounding. Can anyone explain it for the numerically and scientifically challenged?? Like why would it go from 4 degrees down to 2 and back up to 4 and then keep rising? We just didn't get it! Posted by Picasa
