Just leave me alone

The Advertiser: Just leave me alone :

"'It would be a tragedy for him to pass away out in the donga and not be found for some time,' Southern Fleurieu Health Service social worker Chris Proctor said."

This is a really tricky situation when an older person wants to stay alone and isolated and there seem to be good reasons to move them. I know my family and I had a hard time trying to move my mum closer to us when she was getting older and we just couldn't keep making a 3 hour trip there and a 3 hour trip back if there was something wrong. Or even if there wasn't. That was before the Net and mobiles. Can he be hooked to the Net? Can he have a mobile? A short band radio? This man seems to be very articulate and independent and does have some contact with the community and is looking after himself. He seems to want to be a hermit. He might be better understood and communicated with by a tribal person. Tribal people understand that need to be away from the tribe and independently living with nature, but they also understand the need to be close to the tribe. It seems a bit sad that the man's own values would be destroyed at the time of life where they should be upheld because that is what Clarence Farr stands for. It seems people are worrying and that generally indicates there is a need for change. Harassing him to death obviously isn't the answer and people are conscious of that. Negotiating. Maybe even a young child would get through to him. It's a bit like trying to land a plane without the landing gear down. !
