Angry about Africa

Police prepare for more G8 protests.:

"Police have pledged a robust response to any violent protests at today's Group of Eight (G8) summit, while campaigners say promises from the leaders so far are not enough to smash poverty in Africa."

The level of anger is to be expected. We have known about Africa. We have been powerless. We have tried to be part of the sponsorship programmes and then we have been diverted by the overwhelming pain of the tsunami victims, the ongoing bleeding wound of Iraq, but the other night we put Africa in front of our eyes so we would remember. We were all silenced by the array of the pain, the poverty, the illness and the sad, sad eyes which need not be in our world. Then the beauty of the young girl with Madonna who had survived. The fact that her life had flickered and might have been extinguished. Then you hear much of this could be avoided with 25p injections, that so many of them are dying in abject circumstances. You put that in your head against the millions of dollars being spent on nuclear weapons, gadgets to amuse us , our own lives full of lotto , DVDs, casinos, mobile phones, gameboys, chips, chocolate...trivial pursuits which generate enormous incomes for people. We have the technology. We have the will. We have the transportation and we have the capacity to connect and solve this disparity between races. No one should be forced to live a particular type of life because of the random circumstances of their birth. In our world we have a chance to even it all out. So we had more images of 8 men who hold the key to all of this and it is a really horrible, sick thought that it comes down to 8 men who spend much of their time telling us what is good for us and what is good for the world and we look at those images from Africa. Anyone who is made of flesh and blood would get angry once they had absorbed it, because we do have the capacity to change this and we know it. The change could be immediate. We don't want politics, prevarication or pontification. We want action.
